FMB Promotions Tour: Threesome Interview and Giveaway with A. Sangrey Black

Meet the stars of IF WISHES WERE SHADOWS: Adam, Calinda, and George William as interviewed by their creator, A. Sangrey Black!

I'd like to start by thanking the three of you for stopping by this evening to talk about yourselves and your first story in the Shadows series, IF WISHES WERE SHADOWS. I've met all of you before, but many of the readers are probably new to your universe. This is for them.

Adam: Of course. We're honored to be your guests as you are our progenitor.

GW: You've always got to use the biggest possible words, don't you? Show off.

Calinda: *sighs* Thanks for having us, Sangrey. As you can see, the boys are… well, the boys. But we'll try to focus, right guys? For the readers? They do pay the bills, after all.

Adam: There's no need to chastise me, Calinda. It is George William who acts like a five year old who has indulged in too many sweets. This kind of behavior is how he ended up in the position in which you found him the first time you met.

Calinda: *flushes* Uh, yeah. That was a little different. Let's save that for the story, okay? And Will, please? Don't antagonize Adam. We're in public.

GW: All the better. *smirk*

Adam: Insolent brat.

GW: Overblown pratt.

Okay, let's try to focus. I have a few questions I'd like each of you to answer so the readers can get to know you better. I tried to find some that were off the beaten path, so we can learn some things a standard chat might not reveal.

Calinda: Great. That's why we're here. *she flashes the male vampires a pointed look*

Adam: Don't challenge me, Calinda. I expect it from George William, but I don't appreciate this kind of attitude from you.

GW: *snorts*

Adam & Calinda: Shut up, George William.

SO. How about a simple one to start with: your names, and how you like to be addressed.

Adam: My full given name is Adrastus Caesar Adamus Soranus. In the modern era among humans, I identify myself as Adam Straton.

GW: You cut off three pompous names and added an extra one.

Adam: One more snide remark and we're going to have a scene.

GW: Promise? You know how I like it in public.

Calinda: *over the others* MY NAME IS CALINDA MARIE BYER.

*The male vampires stop bickering.*

GW: Sorry. I'm George William Aghton, 23rd Earl of Weldonn. Unlike some people, I'm perfectly happy lopping off a few names and sticking to George William. The earlship was mostly swampland in the ass end of northern England anyway. I think there's a toothpick factory there now or something.

There aren't going to be any easy questions here, are there?

Calinda: I doubt it. But hey, it's worth a try.

Yeah. *sigh* Oh, I'm going to regret this one. What was each of your childhood ambitions?

Adam: I wanted to be a centurion, but of course, my family background wouldn't allow it. I was born into a senate family, and that was the expectation for me as the firstborn son.

Calinda: I wanted to be a firefighter. I really don't remember why. Ladders, maybe? I was always doing crazy things, even as a kid.

GW: Ambition wasn't really encouraged in my family. In fact, it was whacked out of you with a cane if you were caught at it. Leisure was our job. And kicking the poor into mud puddles and such. You have heard about the Victorian era, yes?

Yes, but I never know what's true and what's hype, especially coming from you. So, that one was better. How about this: What is your fondest memory?

*All three give one another a look that could melt PVC*

Adam: The night readers visit in IF WISHES WERE SHADOWS. It was the moment that my fondest dreams came true, and my family became complete.

Calinda: That's second for me. First was the night I met Adam that set it all in motion. I learned more about myself since then than I ever would have otherwise.

GW: Me? Oh, well. The first time I laid eyes on my first puppy…

*Both his partners roll their eyes*

Oh…kay. I don't think we need to hear anymore about that. I'm wondering, what would you say is the soundtrack for your… unlife?

Calinda: I like all kinds of music, but I've gotten addicted to downtempo and dark alternative like Placebo and Portishead, bands like that. With my enhanced hearing, I find a really low down, heavy bass is very sexy. But I still like pop too, and some singer-songwriters. Adele and Florence + the Machine are huge favorites right now.

GW: She has an entire hard drive with music on it. Everything you can think of. I think there might even be Liberace on there.

What about you, George William, what do you like?

GW: Depends on my mood. If you can dance or fuck or flail around to it, I'm there.

Adam: I too have eclectic taste. Artists from many eras appeal to me, even this one.

GW: You're a freak for Taylor Swift, don't lie.

Adam: That young lady is a very soulful, talented songwriter for her age. At least she's not in an insipid boy band like "Single Bearing," or whatever that aural assault is named.

GW: Hey! Niall reminds me of myself at that age. They're charming.

Calinda: You just want to have sex with them.

GW: They're all over 18, what's wrong with that? You like big, butchy hairballs with sticks up their arses. Everybody's got kinks.

Calinda: Us more than most, I think.

Annnd, moving on. When your "regular" life gets you down, what's your favorite retreat?

Calinda: We're really lucky that Adam is who he is -- we can travel anywhere, and he's got homes all over the world, right in the center of major cities to mountain hideaways you have to ride horses to reach. I like the Swiss Alps best so far. It's like Christmas all year round, and we're always snowed in. Lots of uh… cuddling and stuff.

GW: The operative term being "and stuff."

Adam: Of course, my favorite homes are the ones I own in Italy. I've a restored palazzo and vineyard outside Rome that has belonged to my bloodline for generations before civilization settled there. The view of the countryside and the city in the same building gives me great solace.

GW: London. Always feel best at home. I like places in the U.S. where they still honor things that go bump, too. After all the sparkly, hero vampires of the last 20 years or so, it's not the fun gig it used to be in a lot of ways. But when you go to Romania, or New Orleans, or Salem, the people still look at you funny… with fear or desire, or some measure of both. That's why I wanted to be a vampire to begin with. Respect. And maybe the immortality thing. And the sex thing. Having a body that can take a lot of abuse is pretty goddamn good.

Nice. Oh, I'm going to regret this one: What's your wildest dream?

*The threesome seems to share some kind of psychic conversation once again, looking a little baffled.*

Adam: What we dream, we make come true. There is little that is denied us.

Calinda: What he means is we have money, powers… anything we want to do, we pretty much can do. We don't really deny ourselves much.

GW: It's like that Rocky Horror song: "If you dream it, you can live it," man. If I want Mexican, I have Mexican. If I wanted Asian, that's what I go for. Just Calinda, just Adrastus, all three of us… just me with a new friend or a few visitors thrown in with the whole family… it's good to be a vampire.

Calinda: We try not to break human law, though. Or moral law… mostly. It's better to keep your head if you want to keep your head, you know? Of course we can and do do things that humans can't or won't, but I still don't feel it's right to hurt people or do things I wouldn't think were right when I was human.

*Adam and George William share a glance*

That's good to hear. It must be fascinating to live the way you do.

GW: Fascinating is sort of your #1 job if you want to live forever without going batshit.

Adam: Eternity is a very long time. Indulgence in desire helps the time pass pleasantly.

Uh huh. What do you find is your biggest challenge?

*All three in chorus* Each other.

*They laugh*

GW: Jinx, you owe me twins.

Adam: What makes our trinity work is our diversity. Whether I care for them to or not, whether it is proper for them as ostensible "submissives" or not, Calinda and George William challenge me. At my age, I need that kind of stimulation, however irritated it may make me on occasion.

Calinda: We are very different, even though we love each other. Adam is our Master -- in the bedroom and in our lives as vampires, but he's not one of those alphas who'll rip your head off because you don't follow some archaic law. The only places he's absolute is in the dungeon and when disobeying puts all of our lives in danger.

Adam: Not that George William has any concern for our lives.

GW: *to the interviewer* They talk about me like I'm a 12 year old street punk, but the fact is, I would lay down my eternity… for Calinda.

Adam: Wretch.

Calinda: They're fun. Like a gay vampire sitcom. With really graphic sex.

GW: I'd watch that.

Adam: Of course you would. Over a century old and you'd rather sit in front of an animated screen than read a book.

Calinda: To answer your question, we really are each other's greatest challenge, but there are others. Living in a threesome is tricky no matter what species you are. There's a lot of politics going on here. We have separate relationships with one another, plus all together, and when we're in the dungeon, what Adam says goes. That's a lot of layers.

Adam: As vampires, we are also still required to keep our true nature hidden from the world at large. That remains the only true law of our species as a whole. My children are modern beings: they come from a mindset that has no real sense of privacy or self-preservation through secrecy. The enjoy picking up meals and temporary partners in night clubs. They have Facebook accounts and chat on private forums. I object to much of this behavior, but unless I see a direct threat, I believe letting them enjoy their youth as much as possible is the wisest course. In time they will see… or they will be destroyed by their own short-sightedness. That is why the Earth isn't overrun with our kind. Something your fictions have illustrated correctly: there are hunters out there, dedicated to eradicating our kind. They've been very successful until recent times.

*Looks a little overwhelmed* Thank you. Moving on. What is your proudest… oh, God, where did these questions come from? What is your proudest moment? I really don't think I want to know the answer to this.

GW: I had this orgy once--

Adam: ENOUGH, George William! Our creator has taken the time to produce this interview session, and you are acting like a spoiled toddler. We are going to have a conversation when we get home.

GW: That means a beating. Hopefully with a cat-o-nine.

Calinda: Do you remember the first time I saw you?

GW: Yeah, it was great. *sighs*

Calinda: You were mostly dead. Again.

Adam: Calinda, you may consider yourself a submissive masochist, but you are positively dominant compared to George William. Haven't you realized that he challenges me so fiercely because he wants to see just how far he can push, and what I'll do to him at each line he crosses? Your addition to the family in that respect is just to add spice. He likes you to watch and participate in his punishments.

Calinda: I don't really think about it. I just enjoy it.

GW: The fact is, we're like a Russian stacked doll of BDSM. Adrastus is the Dom of Doms. He rules over Calinda and me. Calinda is dominant over me as much as Adrastus allows. Me, I'm just at the center of the Tootsie Pop. I get all the action. When there are outsiders involved, I do sometimes like to run the show. Just to switch things up.

Adam: Which is how he ended up in the condition he was in at the beginning of IF WISHES WERE SHADOWS.

Proudest moment?

Calinda: Oh, right! Mine was the first time I cashed a check written to my own business. I love my job. I love that power and helping other people find it in their companies and careers. What they don't know is that I get that power by giving it up to Adam at home. It's like recharging my batteries as much as drinking blood is.

Adam: Being elected to the Roman senate, and building my first household. Making George William and Calinda can't be dismissed either. They complete all that I have wanted to become for millennia.

GW: Aw, Dad. You're so sweet. (Adam studiously ignores him.) Proudest moment? I'm sort of the earthly manifestation of the sin itself, you might have noticed. I'm proud of most things I do. I'll admit it -- breaking out of what was expected of me as an aristocrat of my time and becoming what I really wanted to be, what I really was, is a point of pride at the very center of me. Otherwise, I would have flailed around for thirty years pretending to be proper and straight and died of consumption with a frumpy wife and some frumpy kids and left nothing behind but a tweed suit.

Adam: That's very insightful, George William. I wouldn't have thought it of you.

GW: Yeah, well, you love underestimating me, don’t you?

This one I can probably answer myself: What's your alarm clock?

GW: Adam's big dick.

Adam and Calinda: GEORGE WILLIAM!

GW: Well, it is. It's usually poking in my backside right at sunset.

Calinda: I'd say the Thirst. I guess it's because I'm so new, but I'm starving all the time. I dream about feeding. So that's the first thing I think about when I wake up, too.

Adam: As you hear, my children rise early. I have never been a man to sleep beyond the waking of my household. There are things to do with my own business and with the needs of my family.

What was your first job?

GW: Sitting around pontificating about how much better the landed classes were than the poor.

Calinda: I worked in a Gap in high school.

Adam: My only job was to learn at the feet of the great masters. Literature, philosophy, civics, military history and the like.

What is your idea of the perfect day?

GW: *laughs*

Calinda: That really depends on my mood, the moon, where we are, how the guys are feeling. I still love time to myself, reading or soaking in the tub. But a really great day would involve seeing some new sight or trying some new thing I've never seen or done before. That's part of why I became a vampire -- I'm kind of an adrenaline junkie. I get bored easily. I like to hit a club and then go home and hit the dungeon or the sheets.

Adam: An evening spent at dinner and perhaps a museum, and a private closing at home or a BDSM club.

GW: Some guys like a humidor, I like to dance, he likes chaining up hot strangers.

Adam: *shrugs* It's my nature and my pleasure.

Calinda: Ours too.

I think you already mentioned this, but what is your favorite indulgence?

GW: Orgies. The mix of vampires, humans and gender varies, but I love filling up our big ass bed with beautiful bodies. I don't get to do it a lot because the Master isn't crazy about strangers in the house. Thankfully, that's what hotels are for.

Calinda: Still shoes, chocolate, and fancy underwear. I've developed kind of a penchant for custom BDSM toys, too, thanks to these guys. It's nice to have more financial resources, but I try not to be too insane about it. We have to live forever, after all. You never know when all the money in the world just won't be enough. I still have that foundation that there is such a thing as too many shoes. Chocolate also makes me sick if I overdo it, so those things keep me from indulging too much.

Adam: An entire intimate evening at one of our homes with all three of us in attendance.

GW: By intimate, he means fucking.

Calinda: Please, Will. I swear, George William's not usually this bad. He's just showing off.

GW: I'm also not a deaf. Stop talking about me like I'm not here.

What was your last purchase?

Calinda: I bought this dress. Isn't it awesome? It's by a new vampire designer I met in one of the clubs. I can give you her info if you're interested.

Thanks, but… I'm pretty sure I couldn't afford it. Is that leather?

Calinda: It's faux. Vegan, in fact. Something I learned from Adam is, if you want to live forever, you have to be careful about your resources. That includes the environment. I've always tried to be as green as I could, but even more so now. Reduce, reuse, recycle!

GW: I'm gonna barf green puke. Last thing I bought was a rescue dog. He's a bulldog named Basil, and he's officially my best friend. I disown these two.

Adam: I recently added a beautiful 1958 Jaguar XK150 Drophead Coupe to my collection. I'm very excited to begin restoration on the interiors and engine to make it road ready.

Calinda: He has more cars than I have shoes.

Adam: If I re-sold some of my finer pieces, I could fetch several million dollars. What would your shoes be worth second hand?

Calinda: I'm not answering that.

Adam: Point. Match.

What are your favorite movies?

GW: The Big Lebowski. Love those Coen brothers. But I'll also watch anything with a hatchet, a chainsaw, claws, teeth… if there are people bleeding, I'm for it. And porn.

Calinda: You can disregard the other stuff. He mostly likes porn.

GW: Yeah, and you run screaming from the room any time I put on a porno, right? Please.

Adam: Calinda enjoys cartoons, and those "chick flicks." However, she's been as excellent a student as George William in learning about classic and artistic film, which I prefer. They like to pretend they don't enjoy them, but they do. I like the silent classics in particular. It takes great skill to tell a story with no sound.

What… great, this is another silly one. What inspires you?

GW: Blood and sex.

Calinda: The search for excitement. The bigger the thrill, the better.

Adam: The desire to fill eternity with rich experiences.

Oh. Well, that was simple. Here's a good one. Right off the top of your head, finish this statement: "When I'm mad, I…"

GW: Drink. And punch things.

Calinda: Flog George William? *laughs* Only sometimes. I exercise, or try to get the boys in the dungeon. Sometimes I shop.

Adam: Meditate or hunt on my property, if it's night. I don't like to take true anger into the dungeon. That's a prescription for disaster. I might go for a drive or a run, as well.

Well, thank you very much for sharing a little bit of yourselves with us today. In one word, what do you see in the future for the three of you?

Calinda: Adventure

GW: Sex

Adam: Everything.

Book Description:

Calinda Byer is all assertiveness in her daytime life, but when it comes to the bedroom, she leaves her will at the door with her clothes. Her vampire Dom, Adam Straton, refuses to turn her until she has witnessed the darker side of immortality and the true depths of his sexuality -- including his male vampire lover.  A weekend at his country estate promises dark, twisted delights the likes of which Calinda could never have imagined. All she has to do is use the safe word, and she can return to the "normal" world alone. But will she?

Excerpt:

“Are you certain you wish to go on?” he asked.

Calinda grinned in spite the horror-movie air and his grim demeanor and nodded. There were no shadows dark enough that would keep her from taking this journey with him. Nothing she wouldn’t do if he asked it of her, just as she knew he would, if he hadn’t already tasted all of her secrets.

Satisfied, Adam took her hand, pressed a small switch on the wall beside them, and led her down a narrow set of stone stairs, now illuminated by a dim red light. The stairway curved sharply, and he was guiding her down and down forever, circling into the depths of who knew what. She had learned from experience that the border between the heavenly and hellish was very fine indeed. She liked it that way.

Calinda’s heart thundered, her stomach fluttering with nerves, and she relished each sensation, tucking it away in her memory like some women might keep tickets to a show she’d attended with her lover. She had been an adrenaline junkie since the day she was born. Instead of drugs, she far preferred driving fast cars, jumping out of airplanes, and dating ancient, sadistic vampires than pills or needles. This occasion, with its mysteries and uncertainties, was better than any shot of pure heroin straight into her system, and the vampire she loved was giving it to her. He had become so many things to her in the two years they’d been together, and adrenaline dealer had been one of the greatest of them from the moment they met.

She remembered with an electric shiver through her system the first moment when she realized what he was, when she invited him home knowing what he could do to her. The biggest charge of her life. She gave his hand a squeeze in thanks. No, she had no difficulty in taking this journey. There was only one thing that could be at the bottom of this staircase, spiraling them into the depths of the earth together: the darkness he kept talking about, made manifest. The deepest shadows inside him. She was so eager to see it she was already wet.

About the Author:

Alexia enjoys the darker side of entertainment, including literature from the classic gothic style to the modern horror novel, erotica and romance that walks in the shadows off the beaten path. She loves horror movies both psychological and gory, and nurses a fascination for and dedication to the rights and practices of alternative lifestyles. What two or more adults do in the privacy of their dungeon is her... rather THEIR business. Vampires are her great fictional (or are they?) love, but all things that hunt the night, human or otherwise, forever capture her imagination and demand that she tell their stories. A denizen of the Adirondack Mountains of New York, there are plenty of legends, ghost stories, and creepy happenings in the deep forests and abandoned caves to keep her writing for the rest of her life.

A. Sangrey Black also writes more mainstream paranormal romance and urban fantasy as H.A. Fowler. She loves to hear from readers of both styles, so feel free to drop her a line or visit her blog or Facebook.
